Lauren Sánchez Bezos knows how to make an entrance.
Like it or not, when the former journalist-turned-author steps into any room, all eyes are on her—or at least parts of her.
She and her husband, Jeff Bezos, stepped into a room full of influential executives and top officials, and the Amazon founder’s net worth fit right in.
The cameras caught the sparkle first. The closer people looked, the less they talked about the jewelry. Soon, the debate shifted to whether her look was appropriate for the occasion.
The couple made a rare appearance at the White House state dinner on Thursday honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Sánchez Bezos chose a vintage black Alexander McQueen gown with draped, off-the-shoulder sleeves.
The dress hugged her figure and swept toward the floor. Her plunging neckline framed a necklace featuring large emerald-cut diamonds, with an even larger pendant at its center.
Oversized diamond drop earrings added to the display. It was an extraordinary amount of sparkle for a single look, though the jewelry was hardly the only thing drawing attention.
Beside her, the Amazon founder kept his look simple in a black suit, bow tie and white shirt underneath. “Jeff’s killing it,” said one Page Six reader.
Meanwhile, the reaction wasn’t the same for his wife once people zoomed in for a closer look.
For some, Sánchez Bezos had brought red-carpet glamour. Others say the setting called for a different look for a billionaire’s wife attending a state dinner honoring a world leader.
“Yikes,” said one person, while another asked, When isn’t she dressed inappropriately?”
Not everyone agreed with the pile-on, claiming she and Bezos have the same taste.
“Bezos enjoys her style plunging neck, transparent dresses. He wants her body, undergarments to be visible. She is his pin up women,” said one person.
“This is Lauren’s style, nothing wrong with it. She likes to wear heels and show off her pretty cleavage. She’s a woman and likes to please her husband I’m sure. People making these negative and nasty comments need to look in the mirror,” another reader reasoned.
Sánchez Bezos has seen a fitted dress lose the spotlight for an entirely different reason.
In July, she shared a throwback clip from her “Good Day LA” days. The former anchor wore a snug gray mini dress and heels while filling in for a weather report. While the dress was tight, it was not as revealing as some of the outfits in her wardrobe today. Still, many viewers thought the outfit was inappropriate for the job.
Just like they thought her outfit for Donald Trump’s January 2025 inauguration was inappropriate.
The White House visit brought a harsher kind of attention. During the inauguration, Sánchez Bezos wore a tailored white Alexander McQueen pantsuit with a lace bra visible beneath the jacket. It has been reported that her husband likes her to dress that way. Apparently, he is not the only one.
Cameras caught Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg appearing to glance toward her chest. The image took off online, pulling both of them into a conversation Sánchez Bezos could hardly control.
In April, she told The New York Times that she had been “super proud” of the ensemble and thought it looked conservative. After the backlash, she offered a brief concession: “I get it. No lace at the White House. Noted.”
Thursday’s gown had no visible lace, but the neckline showed that her idea of White House dressing still leaves room for interpretation.
The children’s book author may seem unbothered, but it did get to her at one point.
In January 2025, she rang in the new year with a makeover, unveiling honey-brown highlights on Instagram. She swapped her signature long black tresses for an even longer, lighter style courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Pete Burkill, whose clients include Megan Fox and Katy Perry.
She later changed her mind, reverted to her old look and deleted the post.
Her clothes have also raised more practical questions.
During a June outing in Paris, Sánchez Bezos wore a soft blue vintage Christian Dior dress featuring a chainmail cowl neck and sheer panels. Video captured her stepping cautiously toward a waiting car, as fashion critics noted the tight silhouette restricted her mobility.
At Thursday’s dinner, Sánchez Bezos had no such trouble. She walked in, posed with her husband and let the cameras do their work. Then viewers got a closer look, and the conversation moved from the diamonds to everything around them.
