Talladega College enrollment is up nearly 14% for Fall 2026, according to the college, and that makes it the school’s highest mark since 2022. The jump reverses a three-year decline at Alabama’s oldest private HBCU. Retention is moving the right way too, rising from 60% in 2025 to 62% this fall.

Talladega College Enrollment by the Numbers

The release gives percentages, not headcounts. For scale, the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reported nearly 800 undergraduates when Willie L. Todd Jr. was named president in May 2025. About 78% of them were Black, and roughly 50 more students were in graduate programs. A two-point retention gain is modest. But for a campus this size, keeping more students through the year matters as much as enrolling them.

The rankings help the pitch, and the college cites several. In September, U.S. News & World Report placed Talladega No. 1 in regional Best Value Schools and No. 4 among top performers on social mobility in its region. The college also landed at No. 25 among regional private schools and No. 32 among Best Regional Colleges. Forbes ranked it No. 8 on its best private HBCUs list in August. On the HBCU-only list, Talladega tied for No. 29, a 52-spot leap that HBCU Buzz covered last month. That coverage noted U.S. News added a new metric comparing post-graduate earnings by major four years out, which likely explains some of the movement for smaller schools like Talladega. In other words, part of the surge may come from a methodology change, not only from campus work.

How Talladega Got Here

This didn’t come out of nowhere. It came out of a rough stretch. In July 2024, Talladega College shut down its gymnastics program after one season. Then, in February 2025, the school dropped six athletic programs because of financial challenges, after payroll delays the year before. Those cuts reflected the broader financial challenges small private HBCUs face. Walter Kimbrough served as interim president while the board searched for a permanent leader, and WBRC reported he was filling the role to help the school deal with its financial issues.

Todd took over on July 1, 2025, as the 22nd president. He came from Denmark Technical College in South Carolina, where he had been president since 2020. Black Enterprise noted a 54% enrollment increase during his run there, and coverage of his move also credited him with getting the school’s probation lifted within a year. At Talladega, he has framed his plan around a theme: Forging Onward: Reimagining Liberal Arts Education.

He started recruiting before he officially started. At his first commencement in May 2025, Todd told WBRC he needed to galvanize the campus community to help bring in students. That message is the same one behind the all-hands approach the college now describes.

Five Shifts Behind the Jump

The college points to five operational changes. The first is all-hands recruitment. Academic departments, athletic coaches, administrative staff, and the Marching Tornado Band’s leadership all worked with admissions to reach prospective students. That’s a notable detail. Band leadership recruiting alongside admissions says something about how little the college could afford to leave on the table.

The second is flexibility. Talladega added a 12-week accelerated session alongside its traditional 16-week semester, with online options and tuition incentives for residential students. Its FastTrack program continues to serve adult and non-traditional learners. Third, the college set clear enrollment targets across every division and went after the administrative and financial friction that slows students down at the finish line.

Fourth, it put more money into advising, tutoring, experiential learning, and campus engagement to keep students enrolled through graduation. The fifth shift is about identity. Talladega wants to tie its historic liberal arts foundation to emerging fields like artificial intelligence, technology, entrepreneurship, and workforce development. Swayne Hall, built in 1857, is a National Historic Landmark. Now the pitch is that the same campus can prepare students for a very different job market.

What Todd Says

Todd called the growth “renewed momentum and confidence in the future of Talladega College.” He also credited the faculty and staff who recruited students together. Looking ahead, he said the goal isn’t just a bigger class. He stressed that the work doesn’t end with enrollment, since the college owes every student a real shot at graduating. He wants every student to leave “with a degree in one hand and real-world experiences in the other hand.”

What to Watch Next

One strong fall doesn’t settle the question, and the release doesn’t say how far Talladega College enrollment has to go to match its earlier highs. Enrollment at small private HBCUs can swing quickly, and families are still adjusting to new federal borrowing rules. HBCU Buzz has reported that the new Parent PLUS loan limits cap families at $20,000 a year, which makes scholarships and payment plans matter more. Enrollment drives tuition revenue, and tuition revenue decides what a small private campus can afford, from advising to athletics. That’s why this number carries more weight than a typical fall headcount. Retention will be the real test. If the 62% figure keeps climbing, the rankings and the recruitment push start to look like a real turnaround, not a single good year. For a school that calls itself the “Alpha Lyrae Vega of Them All,” the next few fall semesters will show whether the shine lasts.
