Alabama A&M head football coach Sam Shade enters his second year at the helm with eyes on improving a Bulldogs squad that finished 4-8 in 2025.

Part of that process is naming a starting quarterback, which is still up in the air as the Bulldogs go through spring practice.

Shade explained to Fox 54 reporter Gabe Glassman that Quad Brown, last year’s starter, was seeking a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible for the 2026 season.

“He’s going through the process of getting a waiver,” Shade said. “We haven’t gotten that back yet, so we don’t know if he’s going to get a medical redshirt.”

Brown played in four games in 2025 before an injury ended his season. He completed 81 of 125 pass attempts for 1080 yards and seven touchdowns against just one interception.

While waiting for word on Brown’s status, Shade says that returner Eric Handley and Penn State transfer Bekkem Kritza along with junior college transfer Mac Armstrong have taken snaps with AAMU’s first team offense.

“Obviously, if Quad was cleared, he’d be in that Number One spot,” Shade said. “But right now, we don’t know, so we have to wait and see.”
