Malia Obama is making waves in the director’s chair with her latest project—a bold and culturally rich Nike commercial spotlighting WNBA superstar A’Ja Wilson and her debut signature sneaker, the A’One, dropping May 6. But this isn’t just another sportswear ad—it’s a love letter to HBCUs, Columbia, South Carolina, and the Black family legacy rooted in Benedict College.

At the heart of the commercial are 11 dancers and cheerleaders from Benedict College, whose energy and rhythm give the spot its soul. Members of the BC Cheerleaders and Sweet Sensation Dancers, including Ashanti Mollock, Tyliyah Moore, and Aniya Montgomery, light up the screen with choreography that channels the pride, excellence, and creativity found across HBCU campuses.
One of the ad’s most powerful moments features Roscoe Wilson, A’Ja’s father and former Benedict College basketball star. His cameo bridges generations, reminding viewers that the legacy of HBCU greatness runs deep—in families, in history, and in sports.

Directed by Obama, the commercial leans into cinematic storytelling with unapologetic authenticity. It’s a visual celebration of A’Ja’s journey—from her hometown roots to the national spotlight—and the community that helped shape her rise.
More than a shoe drop, the A’One campaign is a statement. It’s about Black excellence, HBCU pride, and honoring the institutions that continue to produce greatness. And thanks to Malia’s creative eye, the spotlight shines squarely where it belongs.
