Southern University students have made history, capturing a prestigious Emmy Award for their documentary spotlighting the university’s legendary Human Jukebox marching band.

The film, titled The Hidden Sport, offers an inside look at the world-renowned band, celebrated for its electrifying performances and deep-rooted impact on HBCU culture.

A team of five students produced the documentary, which not only earned national recognition but also brought home a $40,000 grant to support future student filmmakers.

The award was announced at the 2025 Sports Emmys, where the Southern students’ work stood out among a competitive field of entries from across the country.

“We wanted to show the heart and hard work behind the Human Jukebox,” said one of the student filmmakers. “Winning an Emmy is a dream come true and a tribute to everyone who makes the band what it is.”

The documentary has thrust both the students and Southern University into the national spotlight, highlighting the enduring legacy of HBCU marching bands and the creative talent emerging from historically Black colleges and universities.
