From Counterfeit Babies to Chappelle: Earthquake’s Unfiltered Sit-Down

D.L. Hughley and Jasmine welcomed comedian Earthquake with the kind of praise reserved for the greats. “It always brightens my day when I see one of my dearest friends in the game and one of the best comedians that ever existed,” Hughley said.

Back Home in D.C.

Earthquake had good reason to be in high spirits. He was calling from Washington, D.C., his hometown, ahead of a single night performance at MGM National Harbor. “I’m in Washington, D.C., my hometown. I’m working tomorrow at the MGM,” he shared, noting the show would be a single 8 o’clock performance to close out his summer.

For Earthquake, this annual return means more than a gig. “It’s always good to come home,” Hughley agreed, reminding fans it had been a couple of years since Earthquake filmed his special in the same city.

Reflecting on Chappelle

The two also touched on Dave Chappelle’s recent event, which clearly left an impression. “That Dave Chappelle thing is outstanding,” Earthquake said, praising the gathering and the joy of connecting with new audiences. He riffed on the experience with his signature wit, turning an observation about crossing cultural lines into a bit that had Hughley cracking up. Even a nod to Martin Luther King found its way into the exchange, blending humor with a touch of reflection.

The “Counterfeit Baby” Story

Hughley brought up a story he’d caught on a podcast where Earthquake described getting a life-changing phone call on Father’s Day about a child he’d raised who, after 15 years, turned out not to be his.

“I call it a counterfeit baby,” he explained, “when a woman knows it ain’t yours, but she passed it on.” He leaned into the absurdity with lines that only he could deliver, joking that everyone around him “played it so well” he felt like he was living in the Truman Show.

Family and Brotherhood

Beneath the jokes, Earthquake spoke tenderly about his three biological children. “I’m trying to squeeze time in and spend quality time,” he said, describing his effort to keep them close and grounded.

The bond between the two men shone brightest at the close. They traded “I love yous” and blessings, Hughley calling Earthquake “the strongest man I ever met.” It was a fitting end to a conversation full of heart, humor, and genuine brotherhood.
