UDC President Maurice D. Edington joined federal officials and leaders from historically Black colleges and universities across the country at the 2026 White House HBCU Summit for discussions on expanding educational opportunity, strengthening research and preparing students for the workforce.

Edington’s participation brought UDC’s perspective to the national gathering focused on the capacity, competitiveness and long-term success of HBCUs. As Washington, DC’s only public university and an urban land-grant HBCU, UDC connects education, research and community engagement to the needs of the nation’s capital. The conversation centered on ways HBCUs can build on their historic contributions and create new opportunities for students and the communities they serve.

At the Sept. 22 summit, Education Secretary Linda McMahon announced more than $174 million in additional, one-time federal funding for HBCUs in fiscal year 2026. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the investment builds on $438 million in additional funding announced last year, bringing the combined additional investment to more than $612 million across fiscal years 2025 and 2026.

Summit discussions focused on deepening federal collaboration, expanding career pathways, strengthening research and innovation and developing public-private partnerships. The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities also announced a partnership with the Department of Labor.

These priorities align with UDC’s mission to prepare students for meaningful careers while supporting the District’s economic and community development. As federal agencies and HBCU leaders continue discussions on future partnerships and investments, UDC remains focused on creating opportunities that support student success and strengthen communities throughout the District.
