- Critics questioned Black professionals’ qualifications while ignoring unqualified appointments in the current administration.
- Press Secretary Leavitt and other Trump appointees lack basic competence for their roles, Hughley argues.
- Greedy, corrupt, incompetent leadership—not DEI—is what actually damages the country’s institutions.
D.L. Hughley has heard the attacks on Black competence for years. In his latest “GED Section” segment, the comedian and political commentator turned that scrutiny back on the people leading the country, and he didn’t hold back.
The “War on Woke” Narrative
Hughley opened by revisiting the 2024 election cycle, when “the war on woke” seemed to be everywhere. States built policy around it, Bill Maher returned to it often, and podcasters kept it in heavy rotation. Beneath the slogan, Hughley argued, was a pointed suggestion: that many Black professionals got their jobs because of race, not merit. He noted that this suspicion reached the highest levels, as critics questioned Kamala Harris’s qualifications, Michelle Obama’s intelligence, and the credentials of Black Supreme Court justices.
The Press Secretary Problem
Hughley then took aim at White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, saying she appeared unprepared for “prime time.” In his view, the job requires little beyond delivering the administration’s message. “All you got to do is whatever he tells you to do,” he said, adding that she should at least be able to read her notes at the podium. His critique was blunt and personal, and it extended to the appearance of several women in Trump’s orbit.

Qualified Leadership vs. Appointed Incompetence
From there, Hughley widened the lens. He challenged listeners to “name me one person who’s qualified for the position” across the administration, from “the game show host who selected them” to a podcaster in a senior role and the current FBI director. He contrasted those appointments with what he described as the removal of half a million qualified Black women from jobs across many fields. “You actually thought that anybody could run this country,” he said.
DEI vs. GCI
Critics say diversity, equity and inclusion ruined the country. Hughley offered a different acronym: GCI. “Greedy, corrupt, incompetent white men ruin this country,” he said. He added that the people now in power have “the temerity to question Black people’s qualifications” while, in his words, nothing they run is “running well.”
Hughley closed with a warning about leadership. “You’re only as good as your leadership,” he said. He pointed to struggles abroad, an FBI he says “can’t catch anybody,” and confusion over America’s direction as signs of that failure. His core charge was simple: somebody “decided that white was enough,” and the results show it isn’t.
