President Donald Trump has his sights set on another major geographical name change. This time, he’s considering one of the world’s oceans.

During a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday, October 10, Trump suggested renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. The president floated two possible names, including one honoring himself.

“We call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that,” Trump told supporters.

Trump also suggested that the United States should rename a major river before he leaves office.

“Before I get out, I think we should have an ocean,” he said.

The remarks drew attention following the president’s previous efforts to rename major bodies of water. However, Trump did not announce a formal proposal or executive order involving either ocean.

Trump Continues Push to Rename Geographic Landmarks

The president’s latest suggestion follows several high-profile geographical name changes during his second term.

In January 2025, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to recognize the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

He also directed federal agencies to use the name Lake America for Lake Ontario in August 2026.

Both decisions generated controversy, particularly among neighboring countries that share the affected bodies of water.

Trump has also restored the name Mount McKinley to the Alaska mountain previously federally recognized as Denali.

During Saturday’s rally, Trump suggested adding a major river to his list of potential name changes. However, he ruled out renaming the Hudson and Mississippi rivers.

Could Trump Actually Rename an Ocean?

While the president can direct federal agencies to adopt different geographical names for official U.S. use, that authority has international limitations.

The Atlantic and Pacific oceans span multiple countries and continents. A U.S. decision to adopt a new name would not require other nations to recognize it.

International organizations and foreign governments could continue using the oceans’ established names regardless of changes to American maps.

For now, neither ocean has received a new name, and the White House has not announced a formal plan to rename one.

Still, Trump’s latest remarks suggest the president remains interested in making additional changes to geographical names before his term ends in January 2029.
